Career advice from Vogue's fashion director.

Vogue Australia’s fashion director, Christine Centenera, joined a panel of fashion influencers, hosted by the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences at the Powerhouse Museum, and gave some words of wisdom about making it in the Australian fashion industry.

Sitting among fellow fashion industry figures Laura Brown, editor-in-chief of Instyle US and Yasmin Sewell, fashion director at Style.com, the trio spoke about their rise in the industry, their experiences in fashion, the current fashion climate and what inspires them for the future.

Throughout the panel, Centenera spoke about her personal experiences and how she believes others can learn from her journey. Here are her top three pieces of advice for any fashion lovers ready to take their next professional step:

Tip 1: Pay attention to what’s going on around you

"Fashion is at it’s best when it represents a time and tries to push things forward,” said Centenera.

Anyone who wants to work in fashion understands the importance of trends. However, Centenera highlights that the best designers and stylists not only know what’s trending now, but also look ahead to where these trends are going next.

Tip 2: Focus on you

"I think you need to focus on what you’re doing, don’t worry about the competition and just do the best you can,” said Centenera.

It can be tempting to compare yourself to your colleagues, but it’s important to remember that fashion is also about individuality. Don’t worry about trying to keep up with everyone else, just focus on your goals.

Tip 3: Find a mentor

“I’ve had a few mentors,” said Centenera. “Jill Davison [Jillian Davison, now fashion director at Glamour US] was probably one who influenced me quite a bit. She taught me all about the art and gave me discipline.”

Having a mentor to guide you through and give you much needed career advice can make all the difference.
